Starting from August 7, 2025, several updates have been introduced to the PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI tests as follows:
1. Two new task types added
Specifically, in the Speaking and Writing section, after completing the Answer Short Question task, test-takers will proceed with the following two new task types:
- Summarize Group Discussion
In this task, candidates will listen to a three-minute discussion among three people. After that, they will have 10 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to summarize the discussion.
- Number of questions in this part: 2–3 items
- Respond to a Situation
In this task, candidates will listen to and read a description of a given situation. Then, they will have 10 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to respond to the situation.
- Number of questions in this part: 2–3 items
Note: The addition of these new tasks does not affect the total test time*, test fees, result delivery time, scoring scale, or global recognition of the test.
*The minimum and maximum time limits for each section do not add up to the total test duration. Although each candidate receives a slightly different version of the test, the overall test time is adjusted to remain equivalent across all versions.

2. Combined scoring method: AI technology and human raters
For certain task types, AI scoring technology will continue to be applied, now in combination with professional human raters who will review the Content criterion before final scores are released. The specific tasks include:
- Describe Image
- Retell Lecture
- Respond to a Situation
- Summarize Group Discussion
- Summarize Written Text
- Write Essay
- Summarize Spoken Text
For the Write Essay task in particular, human raters will also evaluate the Development, Structure and Coherence and General Linguistic Range criteria.
