PEIC CBT: Opening doors for Vietnamese students
12/11/2024

As digital transformation reshapes education, language proficiency assessments are evolving to keep pace. The computer-based Pearson English International Certificate (PEIC CBT) exam is now providing Vietnamese students with a more flexible, efficient, and modern way to obtain an internationally recognized certification.

Numerous benefits, speed, and flexibility

On November 11, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) issued Decision No. 3479/QD-BGDĐT, allowing the administration of the Pearson English International Certificate (PEIC) tests at two new test centers operated by EMG Education in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This provides Vietnamese students with more opportunities to obtain a prestigious international certificate through both paper-based and computer-based formats.

Previously, the MOET allowed the implementation of the computer-based test format (referred to as PEIC CBT), making the PEIC test more accessible to a large number of students.

The PEIC CBT offers many prominent benefits for Vietnamese candidates, such as convenient and flexible test schedules, with the top advantage being the ability to choose flexible test times. The PEIC CBT offers frequent testing schedules throughout the week, giving candidates flexibility in choosing exam dates according to their personal study plans. Additionally, results are returned quickly, with candidates able to know their scores within 2-3 weeks through online score reports. This is a significant advantage, allowing candidates to promptly use their PEIC results and certificates for their academic and career purposes.

Moreover, the test results ensure absolute accuracy. The automatic scoring system for multiple-choice questions helps minimize human grading errors, contributing to fairer, more accurate, and reliable results. Pearson also employs the latest technologies, such as AI, to assist in grading Listening and Writing sections.

Modern test experience

Another advantage is that the computer-based test provides candidates with a more modern and convenient testing experience. Currently, EMG Education’s testing centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are equipped with advanced computer labs, ensuring candidates experience a seamless digital testing environment. Interactive on-screen tools and an intuitive interface enhance test efficiency, catering to students' familiarity with digital platforms.

Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework (VLPF)

In terms of value, the PEIC CBT is recognized as equivalent to the paper-based test and meets a variety of purposes, with high credibility, and is acknowledged in many countries around the world.

Importantly, the PEIC CBT holds the same recognition as its paper-based counterpart. In 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) issued Decision No. 93/QD-BGDĐT, recognizing the levels of the PEIC English Certificate as equivalent to the levels of the 6-level Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework (VLPF). Additionally, the MOET issued Circular No. 02/2024/TT-BGDĐT amending and supplementing some provisions of the current high school graduation examination regulations. Accordingly, the PEIC Level 2 test (equivalent to Level 3 of VLPF) is also recognized for exemption from the high school graduation English exam.

The PEIC certificate is issued by Pearson Education, one of the world's most prestigious and oldest educational organizations, and the largest examination board in the UK. The PEIC test is held in many countries and is recognized by businesses, universities, and government agencies worldwide, including the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OFQUAL) in the UK, the Ministry of Education in Italy, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Spain.

Thus, in addition to the familiar English standards in Vietnam such as IELTS and TOEFL, the PEIC international English certificate scores (including both paper-based and computer-based formats) are used for university admissions and training purposes. PEIC is also applied as an English proficiency standard for students at all levels of education, from primary to postgraduate, opening up many new opportunities and choices for English learners in Vietnam.

Where can candidates take the PEIC test?

In Vietnam, EMG Education is the only authorized entity to organize the PEIC certification exams. EMG Education and Pearson have been approved by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to jointly conduct the PEIC certification exams in Vietnam according to the issued Decisions.

The PEIC certification exam is competitively priced, with the paper-based test costing 1,500,000 VND and the computer-based test at 2,600,000 VND. (Fees are updated at the present time).
